The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Directorate of Crop Services of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) visited Crops Research Institute (CRI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on our preparedness to partner on a project termed as Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP). The visit was a result of Mr. Augustine Antwi-Boasiako completing a training program on SHEP run by Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services (GFRAS) on April, 2022 and JICA on June, 2022.

Dr. Michael Kwabena Osei (Head of the vegetable section) presented on the overview of the vegetable research in the horticulture division of CSIR-CRI. The field visit was led by Mr. Paul Mintah, station manager of Kwadaso. The JICA and MoFA team were impressed by the Action Plan for implementing the SHEP approach by Augustine Antwi-Boasiako  and the various project carrying out by the CRI research scientists.

The project seeks to empower farmers to see farming as a business, and to empower and motivate them by building them competence to gain mastery of tasks linked to various horticultural crop. The ultimate is to improve farmers livelihood. We look forward to starting the project soon.
