RICE FARMERS EDUCATED ON GOOD AGRONOMIC PRACTICES

Rice farmers from Okyereko in the Central region have been educated on good agronomic practices by scientists from the CSIR-Crops Research Institute, (CSIR-CRI), Kumasi. Dr. Maxwell Darko Asante, lead rice breeder at the Institute taught the farmers rice cultivation and introduced them to new rice varieties. Drs. Kofi Frimpong-Anin and Grace Bolfrey-Arku taught them pest and weed management respectively. Farmers were grateful for the knowledge gained and promised to put it to good use on their various rice fields to increase yields.  This is one of the activities under the “Okyereko Irrigation Scheme” project that is being sponsored by KOPIA.  The project seeks to help increase rice productivity in the central region where yields are below the national average.
