Professor Emmanuel Otoo is a plant breeder and the leader of Yam Improvement Programme of the CSIR-Crops Research Institute.  His academic qualifications include a Diploma in Education (University of Cape Coast, Ghana), a B.Sc. in Agriculture, (University of Cape Coast, Ghana), an M.Phil. in Crop Science (University of Cape Coast, Ghana) and a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana).

Prof. Otoo joined the Institute in January, 1999 and has risen through the ranks to a Principal Research Scientist.  As the leader of the yam breeding programme, Prof. Emmanuel Otoo has led his team to release seven (7) yam varieties. These include “CRI-Ahoodenfo”, “CRI Sonyianto”, “CRI Afase Biri”, “CRI Afasepa”, “CRI-Pona”, “CRI-Kukrupa”, and “CRI-Mankrong Pona”. The first four, are water yam varieties he released in 2017-the first of its kind in Ghana. He has also trained hundreds of farmers and technicians on yam multiplication techniques and production. He is currently a lead scientist in the development of aeroponics systems for seed yam multiplication at the Institute.

His research interests have focused mainly on yam research development and has led to publications of over thirty refereed journal papers in various scientific journals.

Prof. Emmanuel Otoo was a research fellow of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) between 2006 and 2009. In 2006, he won the award for National Best Agricultural Researcher-a Presidential Award given by the President of the Republic of Ghana
