Mavis Akom has over ten years of experience in agricultural research. Currently, Mavis is a Chief technologist at the CSIR-Crops Research Institute, where she focuses on developing and promoting technologies that address deforestation, soil degradation and climate change that characterize food production in her country.
Mavis holds an MSc. in Agroforestry and BSc. in Natural Resource Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Mavis is committed to helping resource poor farmers address soil fertility and declining crop yield problems by sustainably using the environment they work with through the use of improved crop management technologies.
Mavis is an alumna of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders (MWF, 2017), Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP, 2017), Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program (2012) and African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD, 2009).
Mavis has various national and international training in scientific and people skills and has published in very reputable journals. Mavis is also the assistant mentoring coordinator at her institute for a mentorship program where senior scientists are paired with young scientists. She is also involved in the promotion of the youth (esp. girl child) in science education and serves as a resource person for the GES STMIE program in Ashanti Region.
Mavis hopes to become a renowned female scientist and help improve on the livelihood of farmers and also serve as a better role model and mentor to the youth in her country.
