The CSIR-Crops Research Institute has appointed Dr. (Mrs) Patricia Pinamang Acheampong, a Chief Research Scientist and an agricultural economist at the Institute, as its new Deputy Director, with effect from 1st February, 2026. Dr. Acheampong replaces the current Deputy Director, Dr. Ernest Baafi, whose two-year tenure will come to an end on 31st January, 2026.

Dr Acheampong is an accomplished Agricultural Economist with over two decades of progressive research and professional experience at CSIR-CRI, where she has served diligently since 2005. Her appointment reflects a distinguished career marked by scientific excellence and a strong commitment to advancing Ghana’s agricultural development agenda. She has risen steadily through the research ranks at CSIR-CRI—from an Assistant Research Scientist to a Chief Research Scientist-demonstrating sustained productivity, leadership, and impact.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Agricultural Economics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), awarded in 2015. She also holds an MSc in Economics (Public Policy) from the University of Hull, United Kingdom, and a BSc in Agriculture (Agricultural Economics) from KNUST. Her strong academic foundation has enabled her to bridge rigorous economic analysis with practical agricultural research and policy engagement.

Dr Acheampong is a highly published scientist with an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, technical reports, and policy-relevant research outputs. Her research spans agricultural technology adoption, food security, gender and climate change, impact assessment, value chain analysis, and farm household welfare. Her work has appeared in reputable local and international journals. Additionally, she has contributed significantly to national varietal release processes, serving as an agricultural economist on teams that supported the release of multiple hybrid maize varieties, including pro-vitamin A and stress-tolerant hybrids. Her work has directly influenced technology dissemination, farmer livelihoods, and evidence-based agricultural policy in Ghana.

In her new role as Deputy Director, Dr. Acheampong will be responsible for all the technical components of the Institute’s activities. She will work closely with the Director in implementing the Research and Development component of the Institute’s strategic plan. She will support the Director in providing strategic leadership for the Institute, enhancing staff welfare and performance, and advancing CSIR-CRI’s mandate of generating and disseminating innovative crop technologies for national development. Dr. Acheampong will also manage all research activities and other affairs of all the Institute’s outstations.

Beyond research, Dr Acheampong is widely respected for her leadership, mentoring, and capacity-building roles, particularly in supporting women and young scientists. She is a proud alumna and fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) programme and has received multiple recognitions over the years.

Management and staff of CSIR-Crops Research Institute congratulate Dr (Mrs.) Patricia Pinamang Acheampong on her well-deserved appointment and look forward to her continued service and leadership in steering the Institute toward greater impact and excellence.
