Dr. Hillary Mireku Botey is a seed scientist and a Senior Research Scientist with the Biotechnology, Seed and Postharvest division of the Institute. His research focus has been seed physiological and biochemical traits as impacted by maturity, temperature and abiotic stresses (drought and salinity). Primary interest is germination requirements for vegetables (including neglected and underutilized crop species), legumes and orphan cereals and how they may change under climate change conditions.
Dr. Botey is also well experienced in seed production and supply system management for vegetables and
vegetatively propagated crops such as sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas), yams (Discorea spp.) and cocoyams (Xanthosoma sagittifollium).
His experience and knowledge in Intellectual Property (IP) enables him conduct research in areas of IP with focus on Plant variety protection, use of patent information for agricultural research, innovation and technology development. He is into Intellectual Property Rights Advocacy and Institutional IP Policy development as well.
In his function as the Intellectual Property Officer of the Institute, Dr. Botey is responsible for reviewing and advising management on on IP matters. These include ownership in MOUs between the Institute and donor partners, the private sector and third parties regarding research agreements, contracts and crop variety licensing and manages Material Transfer Agreements and Access and Benefit-Sharing Agreements.
Dr. Hillary Mireku Botey holds a PhD in Seed Science from the University of Eldoret, Kenya, Master in Intellectual Property (MIP) from Africa University, Zimbabwe, MSc. Seed Science and BSc. Agriculture from Kwame Nkrumah Univeristy of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. He has been a seed scientist with the CSIR- Crops Research Institute since 2011 and is currently the Head of the Seed Technology Unit of the Biotechnology, Seed and Postharvest (BSP) Division of the Institute, a position he has held since May, 2012.
He is a Lecturer at the CSIR College of Science and Technology (CCST) responsible for teaching Seed Science and Technology.
Dr. Hillary Mireku Botey is the lead author in most of his scientific publications and has led several donor funded projects (AATF-USAID, IFDC-USAID, KAFACI).
