CRI IREACH PROJECT SENSITIZES STAFF ON GENDER CONCEPTS
A one-day sensitization workshop on gender concepts was organized for Research Scientists and Technical Staff of the Root and Tuber Division and Innovation, Research, Extension and Advisory Hub (iREACH) stakeholders of CSIR-Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI) on June 6, 2024 at its Campus in Fumesua.
The sensitization workshop, sponsored by RTB FOODS Yam Breeding Programme and supported by iREACH initiative was aimed at sensitizing CRI Staff to be gender sensitive and responsive in developing Agricultural technologies.
In his welcome remarks, the Deputy Director of the Institute, Dr. Ernest Baafi expressed gratitude to the organisers and sponsors for the workshop. He emphasized the need for staff to understand the gender dynamics and urged participants to take the training seriously.
The Coordinator of iREACH Project, who was also a Facilitator of the workshop, Prof Emmanuel Otoo pointed out that, the workshop would help the Institute mainstream gender in its activities, “Our technologies should not disadvantage either men or women”, he added.
The Facilitator of the Sensitization Workshop who is also the focal person for the Gender Desk Committee of the Institute, Dr. Mrs. Joyce Haleegoah, made presentations on some Key Gender Concepts; Gender Analysis and Gender Action Plan.
She explained that gender analysis would help in understanding the gender gap, and enable the Institute develop technologies that are gender sensitive and responsive in bridging the gender gaps and addressing the underlining gender and social issues that leads to the persistence of these gender gaps.
Dr. Mrs. Haleegoah indicated that, the Institute should always do a baseline study on gender before they develop Agricultural Research Technologies.
Three groups were formed to work on Gender Analysis and Gender Action Plan following the presentation.
