Dr. Eric Owusu Danquah is a Senior Research Scientist leading the yam improvement section of the Roots and Tubers Division (R&T) of the CSIR – Crops Research Institute. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Crop and Soil Sciences from Michigan State University (MSU), Michigan, USA. He also holds an M.Phil. (Agroforestry) and a B.Sc. (Natural Resources Management) both from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he served as a teaching and research assistant at the Department of Agroforestry during his national service between 2007 and 2008 academic year. His research interest is in resilence cropping systems for sustianable food production and improved farmers’ livelihoods in the face of climate change.
He joined the CSIR – Crops Research Institute as a Research Scientist in 2011 where he led on-station and on-farm soil moisture and nitrate monitoring experiments to understand yield gaps-contributing to the understanding of the Crop-livestock integration system. He also worked on integrated soil fertility management and staking options in yam production for adaptation to climate change under the West Africa Agriculture Productivity Program (WAAPP).
In collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Eric evaluated and scaled out yam production technologies with improved and local popular varieties under the Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA) project. As an Agronomist with the CSIR – Crops Research Institute, his major responsibilities include conducting both on-station and on-farm evaluations on crops and agricultural land use to contribute to policy development and strategies for sustainable agricultural land use in Ghana and Africa. Eric has recently evaluated and validated a Pigeonpea – yam integration cropping system for sustained soil fertility and readily available stakes for yam production. This is ready for out scaling in the major yam growing areas of Ghana and West Africa.
He is affiliated to the local association of CSIR- Research Staff Association (RSA) and the Ghana Science Association (GSA). At the international level, he is a member of the American Society of Agronomy (ASSA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), and Soil Science Scoiety of America (SSSA). He is a Borlaug Higher Education for Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Scholar and an alumnus of the Tropical Biology Association (TBA).
Eric has more than 50 peer-reviewed Publications (articles, book chapters, fact sheets and manuals) in both local and international journals (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/E_Owusu_Danquah) and continues to serve as a reviewer and external examiner for several international journals and Universities. He is well experienced in project management and writing research proposals for funding.
