Kirpal is a PhD candidate and currently a Principal Technologist at the rice section of the institute. His current focus is on breeding for resistance to the two most important diseases of rice in Ghana-rice yellow mottle disease and rice blast disease. He has, together with the lead breeder, collaborated with institutions like Integrated Breeding Platform (IBP) and Excellence in Breeding (EiB) with the aim of using molecular markers to select for key important traits in rice such as grain quality traits and disease resistance traits to produce consumer and farmer-preferred rice varieties for the Ghanaian market.
