CSIR College of Science and Technology (CCST) Holds Inaugural Congregation Ceremony
The CSIR College of Science and Technology (CCST) held its inaugural congregation ceremony for its first batch of postgraduate students on 24th July, 2020. The historic event was held at the Biotechnology Laboratory of the CSIR-Crops Research Institute in Kumasi, the largest of the thirteen (13) institutes under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). In all, twenty (20) graduates were awarded with Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees after successfully going through their various programmes.
The occasion was graced by members of the governing board of the CCST, its college administration and some principal officers. Other special guests present at the event included the Director-General and the Deputy Director-General of the CSIR, Prof. Victor Kwame Agyeman and Prof. Paul Pinnock Bosu respectively. Also in attendance were the CSIR Council Chairman, Prof. Robert Kingsford Adaboh, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, a representative of His Royal Majesty, the Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II and the keynote speaker, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), under whose mandate the CSIR falls.
In his keynote address, Prof. Frimpong Boateng admonished the graduates to be determined, aggressive and passionate about themselves. “Ghanaians are not aggressive about our survival”, he alluded. He further called on Ghanaians not to be intimidated but rather recognize the need to fight for the nation’s collective survival.
He congratulated the graduating class of 2020 and urged them to appreciate the value of what they had learnt and to engage in practical development rather than go into the proverbial job market hunting for non-existent jobs. “Don’t go brandishing your certificates looking for jobs. Go and create your own businesses and employ others”, he said.
The occasion also marked the official investiture of the President of the College, Prof. Mark Appiah, who until his appointment was the Deputy Director of the CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana. He encouraged the graduates to never give up in the face of adversity, saying “As you launch out into the world, chase your dreams and pursue excellence. Never stop learning so you become worthy ambassadors of CCST.”
The CSIR College of Science and Technology (CCST), is an institution birthed out of the research and development experiences of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (the CSIR). The CSIR is the nation’s premier research institution established in 1958 to conduct scientific and technological research in the broad disciplines of agriculture, industry, environment, and some aspects of health, and transfer technologies generated by its research institutes for national socio-economic development.
The College is an Applied Research College that operates within the research facilities of the thirteen (13) institutes of the CSIR with departments such as Natural Resources Management, Plant Resources Development, Soil Resources Management, Agro-Processing Technology/Food Bio-sciences, Fisheries Science/Aquaculture and Animal Resources Development.
The College accredited by the National Accreditation Board and is also affiliated to the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
