CSIR-CRI Director Pays Courtesy Call on Ashanti Regional Minister

The Director of the CSIR-Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI), Prof. Maxwell Darko Asante, has led a delegation from the Institute on a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to formally invite him to serve as Guest of Honour at an upcoming awards ceremony in honour of the Institute’s retiring staff.

The visit, which took place on Friday, 9 October 2026, provided an opportunity to strengthen engagement between the Institute and the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council while highlighting CSIR-CRI’s strategic role in agricultural research, innovation, and national development.

Hon. Dr. Amoakohene graciously accepted the invitation. His anticipated visit to the Institute will also provide an opportunity to tour its laboratories and research fields to gain firsthand insight into the scientific research, technological innovations, and crop improvement programmes being undertaken to advance Ghana’s agricultural sector.

Advancing Agricultural Research and Innovation

Discussions during the meeting centred on the importance of CSIR-CRI as a national agricultural research institution based in the Ashanti Region and its contribution to Ghana’s agricultural transformation, food security, and economic development.

The engagement also explored the application of modern scientific technologies in crop improvement, particularly the use of DNA markers, molecular breeding, and genetic manipulation to accelerate the development of improved crop varieties.

The conversation highlighted the growing importance of science and innovation in addressing agricultural challenges and developing crop varieties that respond to the changing needs of farmers and the demands of a rapidly evolving agricultural sector.

CSIR-CRI Visit To Regional Minister

As a medical professional, Hon. Dr. Amoakohene shared an interesting perspective on the application of genetic technologies in plant science and human medicine. In a light-hearted exchange, he observed that plant scientists enjoy greater flexibility in manipulating crops than medical professionals do in undertaking comparable interventions in humans, given the ethical considerations governing human medicine.

The engaging discussion underscored the opportunities that scientific research presents for innovation and the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue in advancing knowledge and addressing societal challenges.

Strengthening Institutional and Regional Collaboration

The courtesy call reflects CSIR-CRI’s commitment to strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and public institutions to promote agricultural research and development.

As one of Ghana’s leading agricultural research institutions, CSIR-CRI plays a critical role in developing and disseminating improved crop varieties and agricultural technologies to enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and contribute to national food security.

Engagements with regional and national leadership provide opportunities to deepen appreciation of the Institute’s research mandate, showcase its scientific achievements, and explore avenues for greater collaboration in support of Ghana’s agricultural development agenda.

Prof. Asante was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy Director, Dr. Patricia P. Acheampong; the Head of Administration, Emmanuel Afriyie, Esq.; and the Administrator, Ms. Sandra Baah Sakyi.

Looking Ahead

CSIR-CRI expressed its appreciation to Hon. Dr. Amoakohene for the warm reception, insightful discussions, and acceptance of the invitation.

The Institute looks forward to welcoming the Ashanti Regional Minister to its premises for the awards ceremony, where the contributions and dedicated service of retiring staff will be recognised and celebrated.

The anticipated visit will also provide an opportunity to showcase the Institute’s research facilities, ongoing scientific work, and innovative technologies that continue to support agricultural transformation in Ghana.

Through sustained stakeholder engagement, scientific innovation, and collaboration, CSIR-CRI remains committed to advancing agricultural research and contributing to a productive, resilient, and food-secure Ghana.
