Qualification: MSc Agronomy (Plant Breeding); BSc (Hons) Agriculture; Teacher’s Cert “A”
Current Grade: Principal Technologist
Area of Specialization: Rice Breeding; Molecular Breeding
Research Experience: Kirpal Agyemang Ofosu has worked in various areas in rice breeding and genetics such as;
- Genetic analysis of grain shattering and heritability of some selected traits in rice
- Marker-assisted breeding for resistance to blast and Rice yellow mottle diseases in Ghana.
- Use of KASP-SNP markers for selection of key agronomic traits in rice
Station: CSIR-CRI, Fumesua
Brief Bio: Mr. Kirpal Agyemang Ofosu holds an M.Sc degree in Agronomy (Plant Breeding) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, and a B.Sc Agriculture from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He also attended the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education where he obtained a Teacher’s Cert A (3yr Post Sec). He is an old student of Akim Swedru Secondary School.
Kirpal is a PhD candidate and currently a Principal Technologist at the rice section of the institute. His current focus is on breeding for resistance to the two most important diseases of rice in Ghana-rice yellow mottle disease and rice blast disease. He has, together with the lead breeder, collaborated with institutions like Integrated Breeding Platform (IBP) and Excellence in Breeding (EiB) with the aim of using molecular markers to select for key important traits in rice such as grain quality traits and disease resistance traits to produce consumer and farmer-preferred rice varieties for the Ghanaian market.
